MPP Gilmour introduces plan to uplift women in the workforce, end gender-based violence

QUEEN’S PARK — Ontario NDP Shadow Minister for Women’s Social and Economic Opportunity Alexa Gilmour (Parkdale—High Park) is introducing her Women in the Workforce plan; a motion aimed at ensuring economic security for Ontario women, and ending gender-based violence.

“Ontario is facing a jobs disaster,” said Gilmour. “Economic insecurity puts women at a higher risk of gender-based violence. Doug Ford’s failure to deliver opportunities for women is putting them in harm’s way.”

MPP Gilmour is calling on the Ford government to restore critical funding to social services that they have cut over the last seven years, and secure $10-a-day childcare for Ontarians.

“With rent and grocery prices skyrocketing, women often cannot earn enough income to support themselves and their children,” added Gilmour.

“Restoring funding to social services that keep women safe isn't just a lifeline for the vulnerable: it helps the 75% of public service workers that are women earn a better living for their life-saving work.”

Alongside increased funding for social services, bigger pay cheques for workers, and $10-a-day childcare, also included in the NDP plan is the creation of 53,000 public childcare spaces, and a strategy to recruit and retain Early Childhood Educators (ECEs).

“We have the means to create economic opportunities for women, and end gender-based violence in Ontario. The Ford government has an opportunity to pass our motion, and be part of the solution.
